Chris Erskine – News

Feb 18th, 2019 – I had the opportunity to hear Erin Loree talk in Mississauga.  She is only about 6-7 years out from OCAD and had signed with Angell Gallery in Toronto.  Amazing to see and hear from an artist who has made it so big so soon after graduation.

The work uses bold colors and thick paint on big canvases.  How she got to this point was the focus of the talk.  I asked a lot of questions and she was very kind with her answers. T

I hope the Visual Arts Mississauga people have more artists from Toronto.

It was a very rewarding afternoon.

Best wishes for the 2018 Holidays

I decided to spend most of my holiday free time playing with different compositions.

In 2018, I felt that I achieved a breakthrough by developing a new way of expressing my experiences with urban landscapes.  I also gained a better sense of color and how that color could support my goals. Finally, texture turned into a significant element in my work.  So, instead of launching into new large scale works, I decided to play with the elements of what I like and create a lot of drawings using inks and gouaches.  Hopefully, this sketches will provide the raw materials for my 2019 paintings.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who purchased my art or express interest in my work.

Nov 25th, 2018 – The SWARM is always a great event, featuring some of Hamilton best visual artists.  This year, I have made available this wonderful piece, entitled “Urban Code.”

The painting features many of the elements that I am exploring in my latest body of work, particularly the themes of energy and competition for space within defined boundaries.

This work is available for $200 and the funds will go to help the continued operation of Hamilton Artist Inc.  The SWARM show runs from the opening reception on December 1st, 2018 from 7 pm to 11 pm until its close on January 12th.  The gallery is open from 12 noon to 5 pm from Wed to Sat.  The Gallery will be closed over the holidays.

Oct 31st, 2018 – Radiating Forms (2018) was recently part of a group of 21 artists at the Grange in Mississauga, Ontario.  The show was organized by the Mississauga Arts Council and Heritage Mississauga. The show was up from August 21st to October 12th, 2018.

In March, Jack Arch (2018) was part of a group show at the Visual Arts Mississauga – Riverwood.  The show featured local artists across a range of painting methods and styles.

Guy Fawkes Follies (2018) was sold at the Hamilton Artist Inc event, “Squared.” This art sale and fundraiser supports the activities of the Hamilton based non-profit artist group that advances the arts in Hamilton, Ontario.  I been a member of the Inc since the 1990s and I very much appreciate the hard work of its staff and volunteers. In that time, Hamilton has gone from a fringe outpost to Canadian version of Bushwich (the heart of the art scene in Brooklyn, NYC).

The focus of my practice is architecture and urban landscapes and how they shape our relationships and our sense of identity.  My current body of work is exploring these themes via loose geometric forms and the use of bold colors.
